What is IVF?

About IVF

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a medical procedure used to help individuals and couples overcome infertility by assisting in the conception of a child. The term “in vitro” means outside the human body and IVF refers to fertilizing an egg with sperm outside the body, typically in a laboratory setting.

Key Steps of IVF Treatment

Initial Consultation

The initial consultation for IVF is a crucial step where individuals or couples meet with a fertility specialist to discuss their medical history, assess the potential causes of infertility, and explore the suitability of IVF as a treatment option.

Ovarian Stimulation

The woman undergoes hormonal treatments to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. This is done to increase the chances of obtaining viable eggs for fertilization.

Egg Retrieval

Once the eggs reach maturity, a minor surgical procedure called egg retrieval is performed. A thin needle is inserted through the vaginal wall and into the ovaries to collect the mature eggs.

Sperm Collection

On the same day as egg retrieval, a sperm sample is obtained from the male partner.

Fertilization

In the laboratory, the collected eggs and sperm are fertilized. The good quality embryos are monitored for a few days.

Embryo Transfer

One or more healthy embryos are selected and transferred into the woman’s uterus through the cervix. This is typically a simple, outpatient procedure.

Implantation

If the embryo successfully implants into the lining of the uterus, pregnancy begins. The woman will undergo a pregnancy test after a specified period to determine if the procedure was successful.

IVF is a widely used assisted reproductive technology that can be an effective option for couples experiencing various fertility issues, such as blocked fallopian tubes, low sperm count, or unexplained infertility. It also allows for genetic testing of embryos in some cases to identify and avoid certain genetic disorders.
